This newly-released footage shows the final moments of a fatal crash in which a distracted lorry driver’s companion was killed after he took his eyes off the road for 10 seconds.

One piece of dash-cam footage shows the driver, identified as Su, sitting behind the wheel of a semi-trailer while travelling along the Lianhuo Expressway, which connects China’s Jiangsu Province with the Xinjiang region, on the morning of 16th May.

Feeling a bit hungry, Su then unfastened his seatbelt and reached for the food he had stored in the upper compartments.

As he was distracted trying to grab the packaged meal, he failed to notice he had dangerously veered off the road.

Just seconds later, he lost control of the vehicle and crashed.

Another clip from a camera attached to the outside of the lorry shows the final moments before it went off the road and overturned into a ditch.

The front of the lorry severely damaged in the accident and the windshield shattered, according to reports.

Su, who had unbuckled his seatbelt, injured by the impact.

His companion, identified as Luo, unfortunately died because he was not wearing a seatbelt.

Police named Su and his distracted driving as the sole responsible party for the fatal accident.

The fact that neither of them wore seatbelts exacerbated the consequences of the accident. Resulting in one death and one injury, police added.

Traffic police shared the footage on the Chinese microblogging website Weibo, on 8th December. As a reminder to all drivers to always pay attention on the road and passengers to never remove their seatbelts.
