This is the frightening moment a mother and her child narrowly escape being crushed under a pile of falling bricks while standing next to a high-rise building.

CCTV footage captured the close call outside an apartment building in the Mingfa Shangzhu Residential Area, in Yangzhou, in eastern China’s Jiangsu Province.

In the video, captured at around 2:28pm on 2nd September, a mum is seen scrolling on her phone while her toddler sits next to her on a small, yellow tricycle.

Suddenly, she looks up and is horrified to find a part of the outer wall from the 18th floor has collapsed and is headed straight down for them.

She immediately grabs her son and runs into an open door inside the building, getting out of harm’s way seconds before the falling bricks smash a nearby car and the trike she left behind.

The unnamed mum later told local media they were about to enter the car that got struck when she heard a loud ‘bang’ go off.

Stones fall from the outer wall of the 18th floor of a building and almost hit a woman and her child in Guangling, Yangzhou, China, Saturday, Sep. 2, 2023. The outer wall of the building was old and fell off due to weathering. (50902830/AsiaWire)

She said: “I quickly grabbed my son and ran. Chunks of building material from the 18-storey exterior wall fell, with half of them hitting the clothes rack on the 17th floor, and the other half denting the roof of our car.”

The residential area’s property management stated that the incident resulted from the old age and weathering of the building’s exterior wall.

They added they will discuss compensation matters with the affected homeowner.

Officials from the Guangling District Housing and Construction Bureau indicated that the residential area where the incident occurred is over a decade old.

They have already been made aware of the situation and are urging the property management to assess the danger promptly.
