A man told how he was cheated out of GBP 20 by a dog seller who sold him a ‘meat dog’ that they advertised as a golden retriever and later justified it by claiming that was simply the pup’s name.

The man, named Mr Li in local media in Guangxi, southern China, said he was baffled when the dog he ordered arrived.

Video footage shows the moment he excitedly opens the carboard package that the pup was shipped in, expecting to see a golden retriever puppy inside.

But as soon as he cuts it open, he realises he received a golden-coloured tugou – a native Chinese dog breed often slaughtered for its meat.

Stunned Mr Li shared how he had come across an online ad from a pet store claiming they had a special offer on a golden retriever.

He was reportedly told that the dog had already received all its vaccinations and was on sale for CNY 200 (GBP 21) despite the breed usually selling for CNY 800 (GBP 85) to CNY 2,000 (GBP 215).

Persuaded by the low price, he immediately decided to buy it.

Although being angered with the store, Mr Li said that looking at the pup’s innocent expression made him decide to keep it anyway.

He told local media: “And when I questioned the seller, they claimed that ‘golden retriever’ was the puppy’s name, not its breed.”

Despite finding the explanation quite bizarre, Mr Li said he decided to let the matter go as the price was relatively cheap and the puppy was adorable.

He later shared another clip showing his new pet happily wagging its tail at him and seemingly settling well at its new home.
