A young newlywed couple was literally covered in money after the groom’s eight sisters and eight brothers-in-law each gifted them a necklace made of banknotes as a wedding gift.

Video footage of the wedding ceremony, reportedly held in Shiyan, in China’s Hubei Province, on 15th May, shows the beautiful blushing bride standing next to the groom at the altar.

Then, the groom’s eight sisters approached them one by one, lining up to present their gifts to the couple.

In China, it is customary for the newlyweds’ closest relatives to either give them traditional Chinese red envelopes with cash, known as hongbao, or gold jewellery.

But this groom’s siblings had combined the two by carefully stringing together banknotes into necklaces, each one amounting to CNY 10,000 (GBP 1,098).

And all his sisters had already married before him, so they had their husbands give the same necklaces each, adorning the bride and groom with a total of 16 of them.

The eight sisters’ gifts were hung around the bride’s neck, while the brothers-in-law’s gifts were hung around the groom’s neck.

The newlyweds wound up receiving a total of CNY 160,000 (GBP 17,564).

Online commentators like ‘It’s Qingqing’ said: “Sister, it’s not easy either. For rich people, CNY 10,000 [GBP 1,098] is not much, but for people without money, it is enough to spend a long time.”

And user ‘Brother Kai And Brother Jung’ said: “None of the sisters is smiling.”

While the user ‘Sister Liu Jiafeng’ said: “Happy brother.”
