This is the stomach flipping moment when a cyclist and a walker are sent tumbling 40ft down into a fast-moving river as a bridge crumbled beneath them.

The Shuixi Bridge Nanxiong, Guangdong Province, dates back nearly 500 years to China’s Ming Dynasty, reports local media.

In the footage, the bike is seen crossing the bridge, but the walker can’t be seen.

Then – with no warning – the structure crumbled beneath the bike sending it crashing into the water.

Later footage – which emerged on Douyin, China’s version of TikTok – shows one man being pulled from the Qingyi River onto a jetty.

Local police said on 9th June that the other victim died in the fall.

One resident near the bridge said: “We often cross the bridge, but now that it has collapsed, we have to take a detour.”

The ancient bridge was listed as a protected cultural relic.
