This is the moment a Chinese dragon boat is swept over a weir together with its riders after they failed to turn around in time in the fast-flowing river.

The incident happened on the rain-swollen river through Yangxi Township in Xinhua County in China’s Hunan Province, where the river appears to be swollen with heavy rain. The water as can be seen is brown and muddy water and fast flowing from the downpour.

The video starts with rowers filmed sideways across the river having realised that they are now unlikely to escape being swept over the weir.

Other boats can be seen turning around further upstream but it appears that the crew of this boat misjudged.

Several of the rowers jump into the water shortly before the boat plunges over the edge and a short while later unable to escape the fast-flowing river, most of the rowers are swept into the weir.

Local officials said all of the men who were wearing life jackets were recovered despite the danger of being caught in the downflow of the fast-flowing water.

A rescue boat on the scene was able to help all of the rowers to safety, and no one needed to be hospitalised as a result.

Dragon boat racing has been carried out in Asia for more than 2000 years. It started out as a light-hearted competition between different villages.

The boats get their name from the decorative Dragon figureheads at the front and they also typically have a drummer to ensure the between 18 and 20 rowers operate in unison.
