This is the moment a student takes a tumble as he tries to hop a free ride to school on a public bus by clinging onto the side.

The footage, filmed from a car in Chennai, in the state of Tamil Nadu, India, shows a gang of pupils hanging from the side of the bus, sliding along the tarmac on their feet.

But as one of them loses his grip, his feet lose their traction and he falls flat on his backside as the traffic behind the bus brakes just in time not to hit him.

The footage ends as one of his shoes flies off but local media reports he was injured in the stunt.

The bizarre commuting technique is known locally as known as footboarding.

A second clip shows how it is done more successfully as two footboarders glide elegantly to a halt as they release their hold on a bus as it pulls into a stop.

The city’s Metropolitan Transport Corporation has issued strict warnings against footboarding saying it put passengers and other road users at risk.

One social media user Dr N.V Srinivasa Rao said: “It is a very dangerous habit. The attitude and mindset of the people should change.”
