This is the moment a student waving a long metal flagpole while standing on a float during a Hindu procession in India is electrocuted with several others burned after it hit an 11,000-volt power line.

The incident took place during a religious procession in honour of the Hindu deity Ganesh in the city of Cuttack, in the eastern Indian state of Odisha, and left one person dead and four people injured on Tuesday, 19th September.

The footage shows the student waving the flagpole up and down as people sing and follow the procession.

But he suddenly goes stiff as a board as it catches on an overhead power line before falling lifelessly off the float as people scream.

The police said that the flagpole touched the power line, which was an 11,000-volt wire.

The student holding the flagpole was pronounced dead, while four others were rushed to hospital with serious burn injuries after the entire float became electrified, according to reports.

The four injured are receiving treatment for their injuries.

There has been no further update on their conditions.

It is understood that the police are investigating the tragic incident.

India is currently celebrating the birth of the Hindu deity Ganesh, the god of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune, with 10-day festivals across the country.

Ganesh is often depicted with a human body, four arms and the head of an elephant.
