An OAP narrowly survived after he accidentally plunged his car into a river and was later rescued by kind-hearted strangers who cooperated to get him out of the sinking vehicle.

CCTV footage shows the unnamed driver exiting an underground car park in Nantong, in eastern China’s Jiangsu Province on 20th September.

But instead of turning onto a street, he continues speeding forwards and moments later, he crushes through a guardrail and drives the white sedan straight into the nearby river.

Witness Mr Chen said that the driver was around 70 years old and may have made a mistake while exiting the garage, confusing the accelerator for the brake, and causing the car to plunge into the river.

Bystanders and police worked together to rescue the driver, who remained conscious, and the car was subsequently lifted out of the water.

One piece of footage shows a young man, dressed in denim shorts and a black T-shirt, standing on top of the bonnet of the sinking vehicle trying to rescue the trapped driver.

He is seen holding onto a rope tossed by bystanders hovering over the bridge, apparently attempting to stop the vehicle from floating towards the narrow underpass and getting stuck there.

The bystanders then pull on the rope as the man grips it tightly with one hand and holding onto the floating car with the other, slowly dragging the vehicle towards the shore.

Then, with the help of emergency crews, they pull out the driver through the open window and get him to safety.

The elderly driver was later examined by paramedics who confirmed he had only minor injuries.
