This is the moment when a farmer in China shows she’s not quite so quacker as she seems when she sets loose thousands of ducks on her crops.

The reason that the idea is not as daffy as it sounds is that farmer Mrs Huang has realised that the voraciously hungry ducks don’t have the slightest interest in the rice crops in her paddy fields in Jilin Province.

Instead, they make a bee line for the weeds threatening to strangle the crops and gobble them up in minutes.

Chinese media reports that she’d tried chemicals, human weeding and anything else she could think of to keep the weeds at bay.

But when she saw her ducks – the second string to her business – attacking her lawn, she decided to try them for some weeding, and realised that she could get it done for free, and feed the ducks at the same time.

When she let them lose on the crops the ducks quickly went to work, not only eating the weeds, but fertilising the soil with their droppings at the same time.

Videos of the ducks at work – posted on Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTik – shows them waddling through the fields scooping up mouthfuls of weeds.

Within weeks the paddy fields were clear of weeds and Mrs. Huang’s rice crop began to thrive.

Mrs. Huang’s solution is not only environmentally friendly but also very effective,

It eliminates the use of harmful herbicides and provides a natural fertiliser for the crops.

Moreover, it promotes biodiversity by allowing ducks to contribute to the ecosystem.
