A concerned parent complained that the latex packaging of a popular Korean-style ice cream that their child bought looked too much like a condom.

The unnamed parent, from Datong, in northern China’s Shanxi Province, shared images of the “concerning” product and said it made them worry it could “mislead the child”.

They pointed out the package’s shape – reminiscent of a stuffed balloon with a bit of latex sticking out from one end – which they apparently found to be problematic.

The Korean-style ice cream known as “Turtle Eggs” is eaten straight out of the rubbery package.

An illustration printed on the outer wrapping shows one needs to remove the tip and then suck out the cold dessert through the opening.

This apparently further enraged the parent who decided to warn others against buying it, stating it is too suggestive and inappropriate for kids.

Despite its comical appearance, however, many users on Douyin – the Chinese TikTok – said it is a beloved childhood staple.

Some even mocked the parent saying they should also avoid buying cucumbers and bananas for their children.

While a user named ‘Baoying’ said: “As a parent, you have to question everything that is not good for your children.”

Following the online controversy, the Hongli Cold Drink Factory, which makes the ice cream, dismissed the parent as being overly sensitive.

Staff added that the packaging material they use is from natural latex that meets all production standards.

The product has been under a patent for over 20 years and only three manufacturers in the country can produce it.

Children do not understand condoms, which is an undue concern for parents, staff said.

The latex material was reportedly chosen due to its excellent elasticity and durability, which can protect ice cream and ensure that it is not damaged during transportation and storage.

Latex also has water resistance and high-temperature resistance properties that help maintain its delicious flavour, staff added.
