This is the dramatic moment sudden floodwaters rush down the mountainside into a residential area and sweep away cars and trees after a powerful typhoon.

An unnamed woman captured the shocking scene from inside her home in Nan’an, a city in southern China’s Fujian Province in the aftermath of Typhoon ‘Dusuri’.

Phone footage shows the moment a flash flood gushes down the mountain, swallowing up dozens of trees in just seconds.

A light pole gets torn off the ground and falls down like a piece of paper as soon as the floodwaters pour out onto the city streets.

Dozens of vehicles that were parked on the streets reportedly got washed away by the flood.

According to China Weather reports, the city experienced close to an astonishing 300 millimetres of rainfall between the night of 28th July and the early morning of the 29th.

Flash floods and mudslides broke out all over the urban area, turning the city into what was described as a vast ocean.

Typhoon Dusuri, the fifth of the year, which made landfall in Fujian Province on 28th July, is the strongest typhoon to hit China this year and the second strongest in Fujian since records began.

Both the China Meteorological Administration and the Fujian Provincial Meteorological Administration have launched a Level 1 emergency response to guard against the powerful typhoon.

Schools were reportedly suspended, and air, sea and land traffic stopped due to the heavy downpour and strong winds.

Additional safety measures were also issued by authorities who warned citizens to stay indoors while the storm passed.
