This is the terrifying moment more than half a dozen hillside buildings creak, groan, and finally come crashing down in monsoon-hit India.

The footage – from Anni, Himachal Pradesh state – shows how the dwellings fold like a pack of cards after recent heavy rains trigger a landslide.

Shrieks can be heard in the background as the concrete structures crumble, sending clouds of dust and debris into the air on 24th August.

Some local media outlets say no lives were lost in the disaster, as the buildings had been evacuated days earlier.

Others, however, claim there may be people trapped under the rubble, adding that search and rescue operations are underway.

Videos of the tragedy have been doing the rounds on social media, prompting Indian netizens to ask how construction on the hilly terrain was approved.

According to reports, the nearby Kullu-Manali highway was also damaged by the adverse weather, causing miles-long traffic jams and stranding hundreds of vehicles.

The Himachal Pradesh government has declared the whole state a “natural calamity affected area” following other instances of havoc wreaked by the monsoon rains.
