A new road in India was so shoddily laid that villagers were able to lift it up and take it apart with their bare hands.

Footage of local men looking incredulous as they literally pick the newly-paved road up was reportedly filmed in Karjat-Hast Pokhari, near Ambad, Maharashtra State.

The clip, which has since been viewed hundreds of thousands of times on social media, shows how the tarmac appears to be laid on top of what looks like a carpet.

Local media said that in the clip, the villagers can be heard lambasting the shoddy work allegedly carried out by a local contractor named Rana Thakur.

The men reportedly call the work “bogus” while holding up the carpet-like material below the tarmac, which simply crumbles in their hands, for the camera.

The road was reportedly constructed as part of the Prime Minister’s Village Road Scheme.

The scheme is India’s nationwide plan to provide good all-weather road connectivity to unconnected villages.

Local media reported that the contractor claimed to have used “German technology” in the road’s construction – a claim that turned out to be completely false.

Local media suggested that the road was laid so haphazardly so it could be finished quickly – with potholes simply being covered rather than filled.

One social media user joked: “This is latest technology – carpeted roads, Modiji himself came up with the idea. You can remove this road and lay it somewhere else should an ambulance needs it.”

Another quipped: “Black carpet for VIPs.”
