A motorist ploughed through a herd of sheep standing in the middle of the road at night after the lights of another vehicle coming from the opposite direction made it impossible for him to notice the animals in time.

At least 12 of the sheep were killed in the incident that took place near the city of Bole, in north-western China’s Xinjiang Region on the night of 24th July.

Dash-cam footage shows the driver travelling down a regional road with another vehicle’s headlights visible from the opposite direction.

All of a sudden, dozens of sheep appear right in the middle of the road between the two cars.

Apparently blinded in part by outside darkness and flaring lights and unable to stop in time, the driver rams straight through the herd, running over the animals and killing 12 of them.

Another video captured on the driver’s phone shows several dead bodies scattered across the ground.

The heart-breaking clip also shows one sheep struggling to get up after apparently having suffered injuries and partially being trapped under the weight of one of the killed animals.

The driver’s car’s front bumper was also damaged during the incident.

Emergency services later arrived and removed the animals from the road.

It is unclear if there was a shepherd present, but local media reported the car owner’s repair expenses would be handled by his insurance company.
