This is the hilarious moment a monkey tries to bite open a bottle of whisky it has just stolen from a motorcyclist’s pannier bag in India on a day devoted to not drinking.

Video footage of the gray langur’s struggle shows it sitting on the bike seat a few feet from a police commissioner’s office in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh.

The monkey clasps the bottle between its feet and then tries to chew off the screw cap lid with its powerful teeth.

Only after it apparently realises that he is getting nowhere does he give up and dip into the saddle bag for something easier to eat or drink.

Its antics reportedly came to an abrupt end when a voice from a distance shouted, causing it to flee.

The episode reportedly occurred during Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday celebrated on 2nd October to mark the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, also known as dry day in India.

During ‘Dry Day’, the sale and consumption of alcohol are strictly prohibited.

The Joint Commissioner of Kanpur, Anand Prakash Tiwari, claimed that he did not know about the video and would investigate to find the owner of the bike with the liquor bottles.
