This is the spectacular moment two high-rise buildings that stood over the city for the past 43 years get demolished to make room for new and more modern structures.

The two buildings located on the northern end of Guanyinqiao Business District in Chongqing, in south-western China, were successfully torn down in the early morning of 12th August.

The company which organised the demolition said they made careful preparations for the blasting to ensure a smooth and safe operation.

They purposely decided to do it in the middle of the night when there is minimal traffic and residents would be sleeping.

But numerous locals who lived near the demolition site stayed up until 3:00 am to witness the breathtaking scene.

Phone footage shows the moment the buildings are razed to the ground in less than a minute.

They collapsed under the strict surveillance of engineers and disappeared amidst the smoke and dust.

The 20-storey buildings reportedly used to serve as a textile factory, consisted of two independent units and were constructed in the 1980s.

Their location is reportedly part of an expansion plan that aims to see the district double in size.

According to the plan, by 2025, the core area of the Guanyinqiao Business District will expand from the current 0.9 square miles to 1.8 square miles.
