A reckless pet owner had to pay compensation to a local zoo after her runaway dog broke into the peacock’s cage and injured the birds.
The unnamed woman had reportedly let the pooch off its leash and allowed it to run around freely while visiting the People’s Park Zoo in Baise, a prefecture-level city in southern China’s Guangxi Region.
And it was not long before the small dog ran off and managed to squeeze into the peacock’s cage where it caused chaos.
Phone footage captured by an unknown visitor shows the pup harassing an incredibly rare white peacock that only succeeded in getting away by jumping onto a tree branch.
But then the pup continued chasing around all the other colourful birds and repeatedly biting them.
The peacocks fled in all directions but could not escape the relentless animal.
Dozens of feathers are seen flying all over as the birds were trapped inside their small cage with the frenzied dog.
Meanwhile, its owner is repeatedly running in circles around the cage and screaming.
Nearly two minutes later, an employee came and let her inside to get her pet.
After chasing it around for a bit, she managed to grab the out-of-control pup and finally take it outside.
Zoo staff later told local media that although none of the peacocks got killed they did get injured and said the woman paid compensation afterwards.
Staff also reminded all visitors that they are not allowed to bring dogs in.
Many social media users criticised the woman for behaving irresponsibly by letting her pet off its leash after the video was shared on Douyin, China’s version of TikTok.
One user titled ‘Straight green bamboo’ commented: “I hate people who won’t keep their dogs on a leash, how do you know your dog won’t attack people?”
And user ‘just enough’ wrote: “Compensation is a trivial matter, this kind of person should be banned from visiting all tourist attractions.”
