This is the hilarious and equally horrifying video of a baby with its head seemingly separated from its body while swimming.

The bizarre scene was filmed by an unnamed person apparently in the middle of a baby swim class in Chongqing, in south-western China.

In the video, the baby wearing blue diapers can be seen floating around the clear pool among some colourful balls.

But what makes the otherwise cute scene utterly baffling is the baby’s head hovering above the surface, appearing to be separated from the rest of its body.

Some inches further is what gives the terrifying impression of a small child’s headless body.

While the baby remains completely still and enjoying the swim, unaware people nearby are shocked by the sight of its head and body existing independently.

Later, it became clear the shocking image was an illusion caused by light refraction.

The confusing video captivated countless social media users after it began making rounds on Douyin, China’s version of TikTok, where it boasts nearly 240,000 likes and over 80,000 comments.

A user titled ‘fantasy no black sweater’ left a comment saying: “Physics graduate student: I’m sorry, this video broke my brain, call an ambulance.”

Another user titled ‘The food can’t run’ wrote: “Physics is weird and it scares me.”

And user ‘Cass’ commented: “Louis XVI Swimming Pool.”
