This is the shocking moment a man falls four floors to his death after stepping through a lift door into an empty shaft.
The incident happened when Shailesh Kumar, who worked as a Hindi teacher at Damanjodi Public School in Odisha, India, had come to Ranchi because of the death of his brother-in-law reportedly on Friday, 28th October.
The haunting CCTV footage shows Shailesh pressing the button and waiting for the lift to come as another man stood behind him and a woman was at the front door of the apartment.
Once the lift came, the man opened the door and may have stepped into the shaft believing that it was dark because the lights in the lift were not on, rather than because the lift was not there, As a result of the mixup, he took a step forward and fell into the void.
More people can be seen rushing out of the apartment, as some of them run down the stairs and others check the lift.
The police said: “The deceased, identified as Shailesh Kumar, pushed the lift button on the fourth floor to reach the ground floor on Friday.
“The lift door slid open.
“Unaware of the fact that the platform of the lift hadn’t arrived, Shailesh entered the elevator duct and fell four floors down to the ground in the shaft.”
Shailesh died on the spot, according to local media.
The police said the lift was sealed after the incident and added: “We are investigating the matter; further details into the matter are awaited.”
