This is the moment a road is turned into a milky way after a dairy tanker overturned and locals rushed to collect the spilt milk with bottles and buckets.

The accident took place on a road in the district of Hapur, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, in northern India.

The tanker, loaded with about 2,000 litres of milk, reportedly lost control and flipped, spilling the fresh milk onto the ground.

Footage shows witnesses gathering around the overturned vehicle with nearby grass turned completely white from the milk.

Locals are then seen turning up with bottles and buckets and filling them up with milk from the side of the vehicle as it continues to flood into a nearby meadow.

The driver was taken out of the vehicle safely, according to News18 India.

The police reportedly later took charge at the scene and the vehicle was towed away with a crane after being righted.

Bafflingly, it appears that the accident happened on a straight stretch of road and it is unclear how the tanker overturned.

There were no reported injuries as a result of the accident.
