A man has taken to social media in search of an explanation after a set of dark footprints mysteriously appeared on his living room ceiling while the home was empty.

The homeowner, named Mr Liu in local media in Wuzhong, in north-central China’s Ningxia Region, said he was baffled by the strange occurrence.

Mr Liu said he discovered the clearly defined footprints after being out for half a day.

He said the ceiling was perfectly clean when he and his wife left home in the afternoon.

But upon their return at night, he was stunned to find the ceiling in his living room looked like someone had walked over it with dirty shoes.

In a video filmed by Liu himself, the prints can be clearly seen spread across one part of the ceiling.

He said he and his wife were scared throughout the whole night, and in the morning, they checked and found the footprints were still there.

Liu shared the video on Douyin, China’s version of TikTok, with the caption: “Can science explain this? It suddenly appeared when I got home.”

He added: “Our home was renovated over a decade ago, and we can confirm these were not there before. It’s quite unsettling.”

One user titled ‘zyx’ commented: “The evil ghost is coming. Are you satisfied with this answer?”

Another user titled ‘Qian Qiao’ wrote: “The previous owner must be back.”

While user ‘Brother Peng’ said: “The only explainable reason for this is that the footprints were stepped on before the ceiling was installed.

“It may have been basically invisible, but became visible due to condensation or smoke, etc.?”

But Mr Liu replied: “This is definitely not the case.”

And user ‘Dd_Bb’ wrote: “The other scientific explanation would be if you have children at home who used shoes to kill the bugs on the ceiling.”
