This is the terrifying moment three men sprint for their lives as a herd of elephants they had been trying to take selfies with chases them down an Indian road.

A fourth person filmed the men as they ran for their lives in the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve in Lakhimpur Kheri district, Uttar Pradesh.

It is not clear when the footage was taken, but it was shared on social media on 4th July and has since racked up more than 200,000 views.

The footage shows how one of the trio trips up and falls onto the tarmac while fleeing the large mammals.

However, he is able to pick himself up and continue running before the angry herd can catch up with him.

However, an item that appears to be his mobile phone flies out of his hand or his pocket and gets left behind on the road.

It is believed that everyone involved in the incident survived unharmed.

One social media user commented: “Well now I believe that you can trip while running from scary situations, it doesn’t only happen in movies.”

Another remarked: “It felt really good to see that the elephants did the right thing. These people bother innocent animals so much.”

And a third netizen simply wrote: “It served them right.”

The Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) is an endangered species, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

It is threatened by habitat loss, degradation, and fragmentation.
