This is the moment a sherpa is saved after surviving a terrifying 200-foot fall down an icy crevasse on Mount Everest.

Footage of the extraordinary rescue shows one of the team shovelling to free the sherpa who appears to be up to his waist in snow and soft ice.

As the camera pans up the narrow crevasse with solid ice on both sides, it shows rescue lines in place ready to pull the mountain guide to safety.

One voice can be heard saying on the soundtrack as they look up at the dizzying distance: “More than 60 metres [200 feet].”

The footage was shared online on 8th June, where it quickly notched up nearly 300,000 views at the time of writing.

Netizens were quick to applaud the rescuers for their quick wits in rescuing the sherpa.

He had reportedly fallen into a deep crack in the ice between Camp 1 and Camp 2, with local media saying that it was a “miracle” that he had survived.

The images were shared online by rescuer and professional mountaineer Gesman Tamang, who said: “During every climbing season on Mount Everest, many brave rescues take place.

“The media tends to focus and highlight the rescues involving clients and foreign climbers, but there are lesser-known stories, such as this one, where a sherpa’s life is saved.

“We successfully rescued a sherpa who had fallen into a crevasse between camp 1 and camp 2, and it’s a miracle that he survived.

“This story is a reminder of the sacrifices and risks mountain workers face in making Everest expeditions possible.”
