This is the moment a brave farmer walks over to help a cow being attacked by a lioness on a rural road in India.

Footage filmed from inside a car shows how the wild cat is trying to overpower the heifer for more than half a minute on a remote road in Gir Somnath district, Gujarat State, western India.

The cow refuses to be pulled down by the lion that has its jaws around the heifer’s neck, and although stumbling at one point, the cow immediately gets up and continues its fight.

A man – reportedly the owner of the cow – can be seen watching the fight from a few feet away.

He picks up a stone from the side of the road before he approaches the animals that are still locked in a deadly embrace.

As he threatens to throw it towards the lioness, the predator lets go of its victim and disappears into the bushes.

Before the lioness dashed off, the farmer continuously shouted at the cat in a bid to scare her away, according to local media.

But the audio of the video only consists of the laughter and expressions of surprise by the people in the car.

Netizens emphasised the farmer’s bravery after having watched the clip which emerged on social media on 29th June.

‘yamunanadendla7879’ said: “Hats off to the farmer’s bravery.”

‘chalapuramskk6748’ added: “He risked his own life to save the cow.”

‘indyjo612’ commented: “God bless the brave farmer.”

‘kaveri369’ criticised: “The people in the car are sick. They laugh and record a video instead of offering their help.”

The number of lions has dramatically increased in recent years, local media report.

Forest department officials reportedly arrest anyone who harasses wild animals.
