A lucky motorist narrowly escaped a tragic fate when a giant drainpipe suddenly fell out of nowhere and went straight through the roof of his car while he was on the road.

The unnamed driver nearly came face to face with death while driving under an overpass in the city of Xiamen, in south-eastern China’s Fujian Province.

All of sudden, a large pipe apparently fell from somewhere in the bridge and rammed straight through the sunroof and in between the driver’s and the passenger’s seat.

Images filmed at the scene moments after the accident show a white Toyota sedan stopped in the middle of traffic with the drainpipe visibly sticking out.

The glass of the sunroof appears completely shattered, with the pipe sitting just inches from the driver’s head.

Miraculously, he not only survived but was also without injuries despite the pipe hitting his head.

A staff member of the Xiamen Municipal Engineering Centre said: “The falling object is a plastic water pipe under the viaduct, which has been disposed of.

“The cause of the pipe falling is still under investigation.”

After the incident, police arrived at the scene to help the car owner safely get out and clear the traffic.

Later, road management workers installed and secured the pipe back in place.

It is unclear if the driver will receive any kind of compensation from the city.
