A coffee shop has become a local hit after introducing a new type of coffee drink where a green bell pepper is used instead of the usual cup.

Videos recorded at the coffeehouse in the city of Shanghai, located on China’s central coast, show an employee cutting off the top of the bell pepper and removing the seeds.

The worker then poured a freshly brewed espresso into the pepper, before topping it with some milk.

Local media revealed that the item, named ‘Green Pepper Latte’ is offered at a price of CNY 9.9 (GBP 1.1).

Cafeteria staff claimed that the item became a massive hit among their customers and instantly sold out after the store introduced it on the menu.

When asked by media, one employee said: “This morning’s batch was all sold out.

“This product uses green peppers as a container, and the latte will have some green bell pepper flavour.

“It has been launched for more than half a month, it depends on personal taste. We don’t know the specific sales volume.”

The footage of the coffee’s preparation procedure was shared more than 700,000 times after it was posted on China’s version of TikTok. Douyin, on Monday, 11th December.

Douyin user ‘Zhou Fudang’ said: “I brought the green peppers back home and stir-fried them with meat. So that a drink that doesn’t taste good does not completely go to waste.”

User ‘Ice is water, water is also ice’ commented: “You could head to the vegetable market, but then there’s no need to go there.”
