Forty people had to be rescued when a bus operated by the Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) was swamped while attempting to cross a flooded causeway.

The incident took place in heavy rains and flooding in the region in Najibabad, a town in the Bijnor district of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on 22nd July,

The bus was en route from Roopediha to Haridwar when it became trapped in the swirling waters of the Kotawali river, which had overflowed its banks, submerging the roadway.

The fast currents meant mechanical diggers that were heavy enough not to be washed away had to be used to ensure all 40 passengers were successfully retrieved from the bus.

The video shows them stepping from the doors of the bus and into the scoop of the digger before being ferried back to safe land.

At the time of the incident, the region was experiencing adverse weather conditions following heavy rainfall and flooding.

The continuous downpour had caused the Kotawali River to overflow its banks, leading to the flooding of the causeway along the road to Haridwar before the bus could complete the crossing.
