Looking like a group of roosting birds, the engineers were servicing high-voltage lines between pylons in Huizhou, Guangdong province.
In vertigo-inducing footage shot by passersby, some of the technicians walk along the cables like some sort of circus act while others sit and check them for safety.
The cables carry 1,500 Megawatts of electricity, enough to power around 1.5 million homes.
And the workers wear heavily insulated clothing, boots and gloves to protect themselves against accidents, according to local media.
The engineers remove hazards like beehives, bird nests and old kite strings and plastic bags that could cause a power failure.
Netizens expressed their concern over the workers’ safety after the video was shared on Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok.
‘Xiaoxue kin’ said: “I hope their salary is higher than the salary of those sitting in the office.”
While ‘underline/youth’ wrote: “At first I thought: Strange, how could these little birds walk sideways, and finally saw that it was people.”
And ‘just for small complaints’ commented: “What they are doing is so dangerous.”
