An oblivious motorist was filmed as they attempted to drive away while their vehicle was refuelling but ended up ripping the gas pump off the ground and causing a massive fire.

The dramatic incident reportedly took place at a petrol station in Xiangtan, in China’s Hunan Province at around 6:50pm on 1st September.

CCTV footage shows a white sedan suddenly leaving the line of vehicles that are refuelling, apparently without its driver having noticed that the refuelling nozzle is still attached to the car.

As the vehicle takes off, it yanks on the nozzle and pulls the entire gas pump along, ripping it off the ground and causing fuel to spill out.

Seconds later, as several electrical cables torn alongside the pump begin letting out sparks, a huge fire ignites.

Panicked onlookers and station staff begin running to grab fire extinguishers and aim them at the fire.

Within 30 seconds, they manage to extinguish the flames before anyone gets injured.

The video drew widespread attention on Douyin, China’s version of TikTok, with many netizens criticising the driver’s reckless behaviour.

One user titled ‘Song Moqian’ said in a comment: “I have a habit, every time before getting in the car, I circle around the back of the car!

“A long time ago, there was a child squatting behind my car. Fortunately, I saw it. I couldn’t see it from inside the car. I was so scared!

“I think it is really important for everyone to develop this habit!”
