A motorist was baffled as he encountered large sections of the road covered with grain that had been laid out by local farmers to dry in the sun, which led him to question traffic safety in the area.

The unnamed driver filmed the bizarre layout while travelling near Zhumadian, in north-central China’s Henan Province.

In the video, shared later on Douyin, China’s version of TikTok, more than half of the road appears to be covered with grain, forcing the driver to switch from one lane to another to evade it.

He is forced to slow down to carefully pass through in order to avoid accidentally skidding across the seeds and veering off the road.

The motorist shared the clip on social media, where he expressed concerns about traffic safety, adding: “Highways are for vehicles, not for drying food. Who is to blame for traffic accidents?”

One user titled ‘Xu’ commented: “Earlier, when I was riding a bike, all I encountered on the road was this.

Footage shows half of the road occupied with grain that someone dries in Zhumadian, Henan in China, undated. The Zhumadian Expressway Traffic Police responded that the relevant road surface was not an expressway but an ordinary road outside the toll station. (44572682478/AsiaWire)

“The brakes couldn’t stop it at all, and both the bike and I went flying. I thought I was going to meet my maker at that moment.”

While user ‘struggle’ wrote: “By the looks of it, it probably hasn’t been officially opened to traffic.”

And ‘Mr.yu’ said: “A small number of vehicles does not mean that there is no traffic.”

Afterwards, the Zhumadian traffic police said they have since asked the farmers to clear out the road.

They added that it is not a highway but rather a section of ordinary road outside the toll station.
