A startling video shows the moment university students in India have their lunch in a canteen flooded with rainwater.

The video footage taken in the cafeteria of the private Chitkara University located in the city of Rajpura, Punjab State, India, made headlines after it emerged on social media.

Shared on Twitter by Akashdeep Thind, the recording shows students sitting on top of the canteen’s tables to avoid getting soaked in the almost knee-deep water.

Some of the students can even be seen walking through the dirty water in an attempt to reach the food counter.

The video received more than 91,000 views after it was posted at around 12.40pm on Monday, 10th July.

Astonished by the site Twitter users immediately began commenting. Twitter user ‘wakeupchandiga1’ said: “At least food is being served.”

User ‘GrtRoshan’ commented: “Money making university only.’

And ‘eenakahlon’ added: “[The] mess is really a mess.”

Following the incident, the Indian Army carried out a rescue mission to evacuate around 2,000 students that had found themselves trapped inside the facility.

Army officials claimed that a total of 910 students were safely evacuated from the university, and added that “the rest will be evacuated soon.”

University officials later stated that the college would remain closed until Sunday, 16th July.
