This is the moment a herd of buffalo are washed away in raging monsoon floodwaters in India to the amazement of locals.

The first piece of footage, filmed from a building by the side of the road, shows about a dozen of the large animals being swept away by the fast-flowing, murky brown torrent.

A couple of the animals appear to make it to higher ground where they have footing and escape the worst of it, but others do not appear to have been so lucky.

The shocking images were filmed in Junagadh, a city located in the western Indian state of Gujarat, with a second piece of footage showing a man and his car being washed away in the same city as the person filming screams in panic.

Locals reportedly managed to rescue the man, who has not been named, in the nick of time after he desperately tried to stop his car from being washed away

He can be seen in the footage nearly being swept under the surface of the water as he struggles to stay afloat.

The images were reportedly filmed on Saturday afternoon, with the flash flood hitting the city in a matter of hours.

Local media reported that the city received eight inches of rainfall and four hours, flooding much of the area.

India’s National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has reportedly been deployed to tackle the crisis.
