A shopkeeper paid the price of being close to a scenic spot with lots of wildlife that attracts not only tourists – but also cheeky monkeys determined to steal his products.

Video footage captured by the CCTV of the store in Guiyang which is the capital of China’s Guizhou province shows how the monkey steals products not just once but three times in the space of two hours.

On the first two occasions a woman is guarding the shop, and on both occasions is unable even to move away from the cash register before the monkey has stolen what it wants and vanished.

On the third occasion, a man has taken over, presumably hoping to scare off the monkeys, but he too is wrong-footed as the monkey dashes and grabs something from the shelves before it then runs off again.

The footage is believed to have been shot at the supermarket near the Qianling Mountain Park, which is famous for the many monkeys that live there and which is also located in downtown Guizhou.

It is one of the most famous tourist attractions in the area.

Despite its closeness to the city, it has a lake and river and a lot of mountainside greenery to attract visitors.

There are lots of shops around the entrance catering for tourists, and the owner of the store, Mr Xu, said it was the close proximity to a scenic spot that made it a desirable target for monkeys.
