The couple held their engagement party in Taizhou, in China’s Zhejiang Province, on May 30th.

But the bridegroom, who offered a dowry of 9.98 million yuan (approximately GBP 1.1 million) in gifts of cash, along with gold bars and luxury watches, had decided to make sure it was transported to the party in an armoured car.

The groom-to-be, identified only by his surname Yan, told reporters that payment of a dowry was a common practice in the region.

A video filmed by a local shows a black armoured vehicle parked on the side of the road, with four guards unloading six large red cash boxes to be carried into the engagement party.

Another photo shows a table piled high with cash, jewellery, gold bars, and watches. Netizens who committed online were amazed by the lavish display.

Local news media reported that the 30-year-old groom, Mr Yan, is from Wenling in Zhejiang. His fiancée who was not named, is from Jiaojiang in Taizhou.

After the engagement, the cash and valuables were then transported by the armoured car to the care of the bride’s family.

Yan said that as far as he was concerned, it was worth it to show his future wife how much she meant to him, and he confirmed that they plan to get married later this year.
