People enjoying a warm day in a park are horrified to see hundreds of columns made up of mosquitoes spiralling into the sky.

The remarkable phenomenon occurred in a park in Chongzhou in Chengdu, in the southwestern Chinese province of Sichuan, on 30th June.

Video footage shot in the park shows people staring in surprise at the black columns rising up from the grassland and a large body of water can also be seen in the background from whether mosquito larvae presumably hatched.

Mr. Guo, who captured the video of the phenomenon, expressed concern that these mosquitoes might land en masse on some of the people in the park which would result in numerous bites.

He said some of the columns stretched up to 6 metres (20 feet) into the air.

Although rare this is not the first time it has been seen and a similar incident was reported in Taiyuan, in China’s Shanxi Province on 7th May this year.

Thousands upon thousands of mosquitoes flew together in swarms, constantly changing their formation.

An Agricultural meteorologist said that the “mosquito tornado” is a natural phenomenon commonly observed during the rainy season.

He said it occurs when male mosquitoes gather around female mosquitoes in swarms for mating purposes.

Users on Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok shared a lot of videos about the incident.

A user commented: “I’m going to take an electric mosquito swatter with me to the playground.”

Another commented: “I used to chase and burn with a torch.”
