This is the harrowing moment a young woman jumps into a 100-foot waterfall after her parents banned her from using her mobile phone.
The clip shows how the girl waited at the edge of the raging Chitrakote Falls – India’s widest waterfall – in Bastar district on 18th July, in high monsoon season.
Despite the shouts of onlookers imploring her not to jump, she can be seen leaping into the pool beneath her.
Moments later, she is swept off the precipice and disappears into the raging cascade as powerless bystanders shriek in horror.
Incredibly, the young woman reappears swimming in the river beneath the rapids a few tense seconds later.
After she swam towards the riverbank, she was pulled out by a boatman, local media reported.
She was subsequently given a medical check-up, interviewed by the police, and handed back to her family in nearby Chitrakoot.
The police said she had jumped into the void in a bid to end her life after being scolded by her parents over her mobile phone use.
She has been identified as 21-year-old Kumari Saraswati Maurya.
The popular Chitrakote Falls – dubbed the “Indian Niagara” – are 300 metres (984 feet) wide and 32 metres (105 feet) high.
