A motorist accidentally filmed the moment he nearly got struck by lightning as he was trying to record the sound of a nearby thunderbolt.
The unnamed driver was stopped at a red light in Chongqing, central China, during an active storm.
As he was waiting for the light to turn green, the man quickly pulled out his phone to film the sound of thunder going off.
But as he turns the camera towards the driver’s side window, a sudden flash of purple appears right next to his vehicle.
He pulls away in shock as he realises a lightning bolt struck within feet of him and nearly struck him as well.
Thankfully, he got away with only a scare and later shared the video on Douyin, China’s version of TikTok, saying he almost “met the god of death” that day.

The clip gathered over 55,000 likes and was re-shared almost 40,000 times.
One Douyin user titled ‘Shagiri’s Wangwang’ said in a comment: “Believe me, what the human eyes and ears feel is dozens of times more terrifying than what the camera can capture.”
While user ‘Xiao Zishun’ jokingly remarked: “Lightning: I heard you were looking for me?”
And user ‘Mo Zigui’ said: “Don’t you know that you shouldn’t play around with your phone during a thunderstorm?”
Following the incident, the Huangshi Fire Protection released a statement reminding all citizens to avoid going outside during a storm.
